ReSignifications

Fondazione Biagiotti Progetto Arte, opening Saturday May 30th, 6:30 pm

May 30 – July 31, 2015
Tuesday to friday, 3pm – 7pm, or by appointment

Biagiotti Progetto Arte Foundation and NYU Florence are pleased to invite you to the opening of ReSignifications, a collective exhibition curated by Awam Amkpa, that will be on view at Villa La Pietra, Fondazione Biagiotti Progetto Arte and the Bardini Museum in Florence.

The exhibition was inspired by the “Blackamoor” statues within Villa La Pietra’s own art collections, which depict Africans in various states of service and decoration.
Since 2012, artists from Africa, Europe and the United States engaged in residencies at NYU Florence in order to create art in response to the Blackamoors, juxtaposing a selection of contemporary works.

The exhibition ReSignifications will be paired to the conference Black Portraiture{s} II: Imaging the Black Body and Re-Staging Histories, examining the roles that visual art, film, literature and music play in constructing the image of the black body in Western culture.
